Situation on the Latvian-Belarusian border delicate, but controllable – border protection – world

RIGA, August 20th. / TASS /. The situation along the Latvian-Belarusian border, which is faced with an influx of illegal migrants, is problematic but manageable, said Juris Kusins, head of the Latvian State Border Guard for Daugavpils, on Friday.

“Now the situation on the Latvian-Belarusian border is of course delicate, but completely under control, so no need to worry. For example, a single person’s attempt to enter Latvia illegally has been foiled across the Latvian-Belarusian border in the past 24 hours, “he said.

“Meanwhile, there was a massive influx of migrants between August 4 and 10, with 320 people arrested. A record in the negative sense was set on August 9, when 136 people were arrested within 24 hours for illegally crossing the border. ”The Latvian-Belarusian border. Since the state of emergency was declared, the Border Guard, in cooperation with its partners – the National Armed Forces and the State Police – thwarted attempts by 475 people to illegally enter Latvia from August 11 to this morning, “said Kusins.

According to the official, the number of attempts to illegally cross the Latvian-Belarusian border has decreased in recent days and the situation at the border has stabilized.

“For example, 23 attempts to get to Latvia were foiled on Tuesday, 11 on Wednesday and one in the last 24 hours,” he noted.

Like Lithuania, Latvia is facing illegal migration from Belarusian territory. Riga has imposed increased controls and mobilized the resources of border guards and the army to protect the border. The Latvian government declared a state of emergency at the border between August 11 and November 10 to authorize border guards to deport migrants back to Belarus.

The Latvian government has set itself the goal of accelerating the construction of the infrastructure along the border with Belarus, which began a few years ago, and approved 1.7 million euros for the construction of barbed wire fences on the border. The project needs around 30 million euros to complete.
