WASHINGTON, July 16, 2021 / PRNewswire / – Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, the Belarus Opposition leader to a Newsmaker press conference at the National Press Club 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 20 when visiting Washington. Your visit at Washington comes in amid ongoing unrest Belarus and attacks on the media after last year’s presidential election, which Tikhanovskaya claimed to have won with an overwhelming majority of the vote against the incumbent Alexander Lukashenkowho has ruled since 1994. She has appealed to the western nations to recognize her as the election winner.
Belarus has been in the news spotlight since the elections last August. Two months ago, Lukashenko ordered an international airliner to be intercepted in Belarusian airspace and arrested a journalist critical of the regime. Roman Protasevich and his girlfriend, Sofia Sapegawho were on board after the aircraft was forced to land Minsk, the capital.
The Committee for the Protection of Journalists on Thursday called on the Belarusian authorities to stop raids on independent news agencies and press freedom groups and not to charge or detain journalists for their work.
