On October 3, representatives of the Belarusian diaspora in France called a vigil near the Interpol headquarters in Lyon to end their cooperation with the Belarusian regime.
As previously reported, 27-year-old Belarusian citizen Makary Malakhouski was arrested on September 12 in the Polish city of Piaseczno. He was arrested at Interpol at the request of the Belarusian police. The young man was sought internationally with a so-called “red card”. Fortunately, the young man was released the next day when the Polish Interior Ministry discovered that Belarus was abusing international search lists – red cards.
“We previously sent Interpol an open letter explaining the situation in which Makary Malakhouski found himself in Poland and pointing out that, in our opinion, the Belarusian secret services are using Interpol to pursue opposition members abroad. In her reply, Interpol informed us that they have started applying the Red Notice protocol in relation to Belarus and that any request from their authorities is being deliberately considered. But Makary’s case proves otherwise. That is why we came into the building to ask Interpol to work with democratic forces and ByPol to prevent similar scenarios in the future, “they said.
