Vanessa Charlot is a freelance photojournalist and documentary photographer whose work includes stories where race, identity, politics, and economy intersect. She has worked in the United States, the Caribbean, and Southeast Asia. Her work has been commissioned by the New York Times, Gucci, Vogue, Rolling Stone, The New Yorker, Oprah Magazine, The Atlantic, The Guardian, Apple, New York Magazine, Buzzfeed, Artnet News and other national and international publications, among others . She recently received the Green Family Foundation Award and was among those featured on the New York Times’ 5 Art Accounts that are now available to follow on Instagram. Vanessa’s extensive coverage of the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement following the assassination of George Floyd during the pandemic outbreak in American cities received national attention and praise. In addition to BLM, she also reported on the 57th anniversary of the March in Washington, the rallies of former President Trump in St. Louis, Missouri and Tulsa, Oklahoma. Her work, be it on BLM, the effects of Covid-19, gun laws or immigration, kept adding new voices and important perspectives to the conversation, propelling the culture towards a more balanced and humane perspective of the self and the other. By participating in the IWMF’s Next Gen Safety Trainers, Vanessa is in a unique position as part of the selected cohort to attend the training as our voice between the committee and the trainees.
