4 found dead, 7 others hospitalized at the Belarusian-Polish border

According to officials from both countries, four people were found dead on the Belarusian-Polish border on Sunday, a week after Warsaw declared a state of emergency following an influx of migrants.

Poland’s border guards added that they had discovered eight exhausted migrants stuck in swampy terrain elsewhere on the border. Seven of them were hospitalized.

In recent months, thousands of migrants, mainly from the Middle East, have crossed or tried to cross the border from Belarus into neighboring EU member states Latvia, Lithuania and Poland.

The EU suspects that the influx of the Belarusian strongman Alexander Lukashenko is staged in retaliation against the sanctions against his government.

“Today (Sunday) the bodies of three people were discovered in the border area with Belarus,” tweeted Poland’s border guards on Sunday.

The people were found in three different places and were “probably illegal immigrants,” said border guard spokeswoman Anna Michalska of the Polish news agency PAP.

A fourth body of an Iraqi woman was found on the Belarusian side of the border on Sunday.

“The body of a woman with non-Slavic appearance was discovered within a meter of the Belarusian-Polish border,” a Belarusian border official told the state news agency Belta.

Acting head of the Usovo border post, Yevgeny Omes, said there were “clear indications” that the body had been dragged from Poland to Belarus.

Belta said three children, a man and an elderly woman were found near the body. They are all Iraqi citizens, added Belta.

Belta reported that the dead woman’s husband said that Polish law enforcement officials drove her to the border and forced her to switch to the Belarusian side “under threat”.

Poland’s border guards tweeted on Sunday that they had also spent several hours rescuing migrants stuck in the marshland of the Suprasl River on the border with Belarus.

“Eight immigrants (five men and three women) were rescued, seven of them were hospitalized,” the border guards tweeted.

They also said Saturday was an intense day, recording 324 attempts to illegally cross the border from Belarus into Poland.

Poland last week imposed a 30-day emergency measure banning foreigners from the area along its border with Belarus, the first time the country has used such a measure since the fall of communism in 1989.

It has also sent thousands of soldiers to the border and started building a barbed wire fence.

In early August, Belarus announced that it had discovered a dead Iraqi near the border with Lithuania and claimed that he had been murdered.

Western governments have imposed several sanctions on Belarus for cracking down on dissenting views when protests broke out across the country last year after a controversial election.
